What is a bodhisattva and what does it mean to be one?

A bodhisattva is a person who has attained enlightenment, or the state of perfect wisdom and compassion, but chooses to remain in the cycle of rebirth to help all sentient beings achieve the same goal.

A bodhisattva is motivated by the great vow to liberate all beings from suffering and ignorance, and to lead them to the ultimate happiness of nirvana. A bodhisattva is also a role model and a benefactor for all seekers of the truth, as they demonstrate the qualities and virtues of a true spiritual practitioner.

To be a bodhisattva means to dedicate one’s life to the service of humanity and the welfare of all beings. It also means to cultivate the six perfections, or paramitas, which are:

  • Generosity, or the practice of giving without expecting anything in return
  • Morality, or the practice of observing the ethical precepts and avoiding harmful actions
  • Patience, or the practice of enduring difficulties and hardships without anger or resentment
  • Effort, or the practice of applying oneself diligently and joyfully to the spiritual path
  • Concentration, or the practice of developing a calm and focused mind through meditation
  • Wisdom, or the practice of realizing the true nature of reality and oneself
